Building home far away from home

Hola! This is Clara (Spanish volunteer) speaking from the other side of the screen!

If I had to define these months here in a few words they would be: transforming and growing.

Moving to another country, thousands of kilometers away from home, is not only uncomfortable and sad, it is also to cry with happiness and appreciate every moment of this new stage.

It has been 7 months since I gave my family and friends one last hug goodbye. It’s been 7 months since I took that plane without looking back, leaving a whole life behind and venturing into a very different and comforting one.

Now I look back with the certainty and happiness that, one day, I decided to take this opportunity and choose this project.

Living in Greece is bringing me things I never imagined, among them, many indescribable things. It’s not just the place, it’s the people, the project and all the learning and opportunities that I choose to take every day.

I would love to be able to refer to something in particular, the pity (or fortune) is that I can not, it is the whole that makes my stay here is being unforgettable.

Being able to volunteer at Serres was an opportunity that I did not turn down, and to this day, I do not regret it at all. PRAXIS is an organization that welcomes, in which every grain of sand counts, in which the smallest idea can be very important and, if it is carried out, it ends up being more comforting than expected.

Volunteering is not just the volunteering itself, it is everything that goes with it. It’s learning, it’s independence, it’s conflict resolution and finding your own way. It is learning a new language and, little by little, it sounds less like Chinese. It is seeing the city for the first time with the eyes of a newborn child without knowing that, in a few months, it will become your new home. It is the people who accompany you all along the way, who will fulfill you much more than you expect. It is personal and professional growth. It is a personal decision, which, at least for me, I do not regret. I am thankful every day that I took this opportunity.

I guess a piece of me will always stay here.
